Landscape your yardwith water in mind
With drought being a buzzword in the news and in our lives, homeowners
are continually looking for ways to save resources and, at the same
time, save money. Large grassy areas are being replaced by hardscape
features and sitting areas.
"People are using their landscape to create another room in the
backyard," says Karl Kuhni, owner of Kuhni Landscaping. "Barbecue pits,
designated playground areas and seating areas bring an inviting feel to
the yard while limiting water use."
Trends also point to using dry-weather tolerant grasses like fescues
and Bermudas. Although initial costs might be higher, water bill
savings will make up the difference over time.
Water features, like recirculating fountains, offer another inviting
option with very limited water use. Some home owners are adding a dry
stream bed to the yard, offering the feel of a water feature without
the use of water.
